Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020) Review

Image
Birds of Prey ( Cathy Yan, 2020) was amazing. Go and see it. Interestingly, it is rated 15 in my country, the UK but R- Rated, 18 in the U.S. The soundtrack, aesthetics, jokes, action, acting all so colourful and edgy. My friends, who are not quite as regular cinema go-ers as me, enjoyed it as much as I did. People (men and women) won't see this because it's a female superhero action movie, it shouldn't be the case but it is. I've seen a lot of slating of it online by people who haven't even seen it and the evidence by how empty the cinema was, despite today being the opening weekend, compared with when I saw Endgame which was basically sold out the day after it's release. I get it was not going to be as busy as Endgame was the "final" chapter, but I still expected BOP to be half full at least and it wasn't, which was a shame and I read that the takings were not very high on the opening day in the U.S . Girl Squad: Rosie Perez as ...

JoJo Rabbit (2020) Review

Image
Watched JoJo Rabbit ( Taika Waititi, 2020) . It was at funny, when it was talking plainly at the ridiculousness of Germany at time time. At times though heartbreaking, the tone shifts in a split second. One second I was laughing, the next I was nearly in tears. Superb acting, especially from Scarlett Johansson as Rosie, I can't think of a role she's been in like this before and Roman Griffin Davis as JoJo, he is a little star in the making. It reminded me a little of the TV show World on Fire (BBC, 2019) (subject matter) crossed with a Wes Anderson, like the The Grand Budapest Hotel but especially Moonrise Kingdom (cinematography and the funnier moments). Reminds us all that not all German's were "bad" at the time and the allied nations including the US and UK were not "good" either, both sides included people who were good and those who were bad . 4.5 stars out of 5 ✩✩✩✩(✩) Scarlett Johansson as Rosie and Roman Griffin as JoJo

Bombshell (2020) Review

Image
Went to see Bombshell ( Jay Roach, 2020) at the cinema  a few days ago with my friend. I really liked this film, it was very interesting and educational, especially coming from someone who lives in the UK and had no idea about this "bombshell" at Fox, even though the lawsuit was in recent years. I loved the breaking of the 4th wall in the opening scene. The acting (and make-up, Charlize Theron looked SO much like the real Megyn) was brilliant all round. The attention to detail by Margot Robbie deserves a mention too in her acting, when she presses the lift button her hand is literally shaking in fear.  Four stars٭ ✰✰✰✰   Charlize Theron and the real Megyn *Major spoilers ahead*  It was quite a sad film in some ways, because those women will not only have to live with what happened to them for the rest of their lives, but Murdoch paid Ailes off with a larger amount of money than the victims combined, probably at least - if not more money that he would...

Judy (2019) Review

Image
On 29th January I finally saw Judy at the cinema (came out in October, didn't get chance to see it, saw it at the silver screen re-release, yes I am not the intended silver screen age). Such a good film. Renee Zellweger was amazing, many of the shots were close ups on her face and she never once drops the character of Judy Garland. Her BAFTA win for best leading actress was so well deserved (also such a cute moment when she cried at Jessie Buckleys Wild Rose performance at the BAFTAS, as she and Jesse are presumably good friends after co-starring in Judy).  Judy Garland's life was so heartbreaking. There is no such thing as the curse of Wizard of Oz, but it's so sad that a film that inspires so many people is responsible for ruining the actors in the films lives, ultimately the Wizard of Oz was responsible for Judy Garland's death. I don't think I'll ever watch the Wizard of Oz in the same way after seeing Judy. 4 Stars ☆☆☆☆

Birds Of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn - 28th January 2020

Image
Me, Maisie and Margot taken by Maisie (All photos taken by me except the selfie which was taken by my friend Maisie of us). After going to the promo event for Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn we stood outside the premiere at the BFI Imax, which was cold but fun. We met a few of the cast members, including Margot Robbie (who was wearing pink gloves like Harley wears in the Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend number). Margot Robbie was so nice, she was late in going into the premiere, but she was more concerned at meeting everyone. She signed my pizza box with her face on that I took from the Birds of Prey promo event earlier in the day (it was a clean, unused one).

Birds Of Prey Promo event - London, Jan 2020

Image
(All photos taken by me in this article except for the one of me that was taken by my friend Maisie). In January, me and my friend Maisie went along to the Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. It was a temporary, three day roller disco, same aestetic style as the film, at the Steelyard night club in London. I saw in a news article online about it, decided I wanted to see it, didn't think about it for a while then a few days before thought about it and got tickets for the 2nd day of the rink, Wednesday 28th January and myself and my friend Maisie went.  It was amazing.  The night club the event was in even looked a bit like the night club that is used in the film. The aestetics were amazing, the neon colours and lighting, the music, the things to do. You could roller skate, eat free Pappa Johns pizza, eat free candyfloss (with a free flashy glowsticks), there were free sweets, free tote bags with Birds of Prey on them, you could get yo...

Downton Abbey (2019)

Image
Finally saw Downton Abbey the Moviein January at the Odeon Silver Screen (yes, I was the youngest there by at least 35 years). Loved the show since the start of series 1 almost a decade ago. The film did not disappoint. It was a bit dark lighting wise. It felt like watching a long episode of Downton. The humour was good (Mr Mosley is one of the best characters). Perfect film for fans. Better LBGTQ representation than the biggest film of last year, Avengers Endgame, despite Downton being set in 1927. Really hope for a sequel. 5 stars. P.s I want all of Edith's dresses.

Back for 2020
