Le Mans '66/ Ford Vs Ferrari (watched in 2020, originally released in 2019) review

Image
Le Mans '66 poster Back in March, a week or so before cinemas closed, at the Silver Screen cinema (I am nowhere near old enough to go to the silver screen because its supposed to be for over 50s, but I sometimes go anyway as I am a paying customer the cinema cannot stop me, plus I was accompanying my Dad who is in that age bracket), therefore this was a re-release of 'Le Mans '66' (James Mangold, 2019). By this point, people where already avoiding the cinema, it was near- empty, though the silver screen showings are usually packed. Christian Bale as racer Ken Miles  This film in America is called 'Ford Vs Ferrari'. Normally I hate it when they change the name of a film to simplify it for the US market, but in this case I think Ford Vs Ferrari is a more appropriate name, as the films more about that, a battle between the two car manufactures than the 1966 Le Mans race itself. I was a little disappointed with this giving it had been up for best pic...

Sonic The Hedgehog The Movie (2020) (Written February 2020)

Image
Sonic The Hedgehog poster Back in February, when the cinemas were still open, I saw Sonic the Hedgehog ( Jeff Fowler, 2020) movie, this was the last new release I saw before all the closures. I wrote this brief review back then and never posted. So here are my thoughts. Sonic The Hedgehog is a movie based on a 90s video game franchise which has lots of other media based around it, TV shows, books etc, but this is the first feature film about the blue, speedy hedgehog.  Sonic the Hedgehog was okay, kids and fans will enjoy it. It was amusing in places, I liked the scene set in the bar. Baby Sonic was cute. Shame it was in the real world and not more in like, Sonics world (I know a bit about Sonic but not much). At least this version of the movie that was released was much better than the original trailer, in which the animation of Sonic would have scared me, let alone eight year olds. That being said, I would quite like to see the original edit be released one day, it wou...

Send in the clowns: A look at Birds Of Prey and the femanistic superhero movie - Written February 2020

In 2016, when ' Suicide Squad ' (David Ayer) was released, despite having not so favourable reviews, the takings were high. The stand out character, that everyone remembers, was Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. She became an icon, girls were inspired by her, they cosplayed as her for Halloween, costume parties, at every comic convention there was hundreds of Harley Quinn's. Where are they now ? Image from DC Comics website Yet, 2020 and ' Birds of Prey ' (Cathy Yan) is released. Domestically at the U.S box office it apparently took $13 million on its opening day a few days ago. (I should point out it made its $80 million budget back in a weekend, which is pretty impressive.) Apparently, however, it's the lowest opening for a DC film. This is despite good reviews and heavy promotion, the last few weeks all I've seen is posters for it and television adverts. Harley Quinn was so popular a few years ago, people really wanted to see her again. So where hav...
