Sonic The Hedgehog The Movie (2020) (Written February 2020)

Back in February, when the cinemas were still open, I saw Sonic the Hedgehog ( Jeff Fowler, 2020) movie, this was the last new release I saw before all the closures. I wrote this brief review back then and never posted. So here are my thoughts. Sonic The Hedgehog is a movie based on a 90s video game franchise which has lots of other media based around it, TV shows, books etc, but this is the first feature film about the blue, speedy hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog was okay, kids and fans will enjoy it. It was amusing in places, I liked the scene set in the bar. Baby Sonic was cute. Shame it was in the real world and not more in like, Sonics world (I know a bit about Sonic but not much). At least this version of the movie that was released was much better than the original trailer, in which the animation of Sonic would have scared me, let alone eight year olds. That being said, I would quite like to see the original edit be released one day, it would have been so bad it would have been good. In the cinema screen I was in, a few rows infront there was a birthday party, a whole row of kids with cardboard party hats on, and they did not make a sound during the movie, which is a good sign that it kept them entertained for an hour and a half. Additionally, there was a few kids preteneding to be Sonic, running around the front of the cinema. Who knows, maybe it will inspire kids to take up running or other activities. I give Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and a half stars, one of those is for baby Sonic and the other full star for the bar scene.✰✰ .

Bar Scene Sonic

My friend who I went to see it with is a life long, big Sonic fan gave it 4 stars ✰✰✰✰, and her star rating is more important as she is a fan. I will not say what happens in the last few minutes of the film, but my friend really liked that, and it hints at a sequel, and even though I know little of Sonic, I know enough that even I was like "Ooooh". One for the fans and kids, maybe not one to bother with if you are not particularly into video games or have kids of primary school age.
