My 2020 in film round up

Just a brief round up of what films I have seen at the cinema this year/ other film related activities. Of course, not half as much as I would have liked.

January

Downton Abbey promo poster

I saw the Downton Abbey (Michael Engler, 2019) movie at the cinema (Odeon) with my parents at a silver screen re-release as I somehow did not get round to seeing this in the cinema at the end of 2019 when it came out despite being a huge Downton fan. This was probably the only time I have been to the cinema this whole year where it was full.

I attended the  Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (Cathy Yan, 2020) Rollerdisco promotional event at The Steelyard night club in London with my friend Maisie. I was lucky I just saw about the tickets for it online, it was free and so cool, the neon lights, the cool drinks, the free candy floss, even down to the writing on the women's toilets mirror.

Me, Maisie and Margot Robbie

On the same day, me and Maisie went to stand outside the premiere of Birds Of Prey at the BFI IMAX in London and we were lucky enough to meet Margot Robbie. This was globally one of the last big premieres to happen pre-pandemic, of course I did not know that would be the case at the time.

I saw Judy (Rupert Goold, 2019) at the cinema (Odeon) at the silver screen showing with my parents as I did not get round to seeing it when it was originally released. This was an amazing movie, and the screen was busy.

February

We should have been locking down by this point, but we were just told how bad the coronavirus was in Italy and told to sing Happy birthday twice while washing our hands at this stage so cinemas remained open and we lived our lives normally, just a few handsaniter stations in places.

I visited the Crowns and Gowns exhibition in Ely Cathedral in Ely, Cambridgeshire with my parents for my mums birthday. Saw dresses from The Kings Speech, The Crown and The Other Bolyne Girl.

Bombshell poster

JoJo Rabbit poster

I saw Bombshell (Jay Roach, 2019) at my local Odeon with my friend Maisie, as Margot Robbie was in it and we met Margot a few weeks before. It was released in 2019 in the US but 2020 here. I really liked it and have since brought it on DVD.

I saw JoJo Rabbit (Taika Waititi, 2020) at my local Odeon, it came out for general release in the US in 2019 but not till 2020 here. I laughed and cried. I was pretty much the only person in the cinema.

I saw Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (Cathy Yan, 2020) at the cinema (Odeon) with my friends Maisie (who I went to the promo of BOP with/ the premiere with), Hannah and Catherine, probably the last time I met with a group of friends without restrictions. There was a few people there but I thought it would be busier. One of my highlights of this year. I brought the soundtrack, book and DVD of BOP since. (Bombshell, JoJo Rabbit and BOP were all in the same week).

Sonic poster

I saw Sonic The Hedgehog (Jeff Fowler, 2020) with my Sonic loving friend Hannah at the cinema (Odeon). This was the last new release I saw before restrictions. Hannah enjoyed it, myself not so much, definitely not the worst film I have ever seen but not the best either.

March

Yet again we should have been in lockdown but for most of the month we were not.

I saw Le Mans '66/ Ford Vs Ferrari (James Mangold, 2019) at the cinema (Odeon) with my dad at the silver screen re-release as we did not get round to seeing it in 2019. By this point the cinema was empty, people were being told to avoid crowds, so the usually busy silver screen was just me, my dad and one other gentleman. We brought a ticket for my mum but she decided to stay away to avoid crowds but there was no crowd to avoid as everyone was avoiding them which is why it was so empty. This was the last film I saw at the cinema before lockdown.

Near the end of March, the cinemas closed down then the national full lockdown started a week or so later.

April, May, June - lockdown till near the end of June. Some cinemas were allowed to open in July but local ones to me did not open till August for safety and because so many films have been delayed they did not see any point in opening till the schools were off for the summer.

 August

My area was in tier 1 so cinemas were allowed to be open, and non-essential travel was allowed.

Stage Mother poster

My first return visit to cinemas after cinemas had been closed for over 4 months. I saw Stage Mother (Thom Fitzgerald, 2020) with my friends Harry and Maisie, we were the only ones in there, the film was ok but more than anything I was just happy to be back in a cinema (Odeon).

Summerland poster

I saw Summerland (Jessica Swale, 2020) (second LGBTIA+  focused film I saw in a month), probably because the studios had held their big releases back so indie films were all that was out, which was good in someways because it drew attention to indie films which may have been overshadowed or not shown at all in cinemas but negative in others because the blockbusters are what keep cinemas going) (we were in tier 1 so this was allowed), there was only me, my parents and one other person in the screen, mask wearing had become mandatory in cinemas by this point.
I visited a Disney Cruise Liner (saw it from the outside) with my parents in where it was stranded basically as many ports were shut so the ship was just stuck there.

My photo of the Disney cruiseliner at Dover

September I did not do anything film related.

October

Cinderella poster

Still in tier 1, I saw a re-release of Cinderella (Kenneth Branagh, 2015) for my birthday as there was a lack of new films out at the time, with my friends Maisie, Hannah, Marta and Harry at the Odeon. Super saving screening as it was a re-run. It was the busiest I had seen the cinema since February, about 20 people in there, good to see people were starting to return to them again.
This was the month Cineworld closed, really sad to see but I can see why they closed with a lack of business.

November

The Burnt Orange Heresy poster

Still tier 1 at the very start of the month, me and my parents saw The Burnt Orange Heresy (Giuseppe Capotondi, 2020) for my dads birthday at a Vue which was about an hour away by car but was the only place it was on so we had to go there to see it. We were the only people in the cinema. I did not really enjoy the film, but at least it was a bit of business for the cinema.
We entered another lockdown so all the cinemas in England closed.

December

Started the month off in lockdown, then came out of lockdown and my area got put straight into tier 3, so while some cinemas were able to open, the ones in my area had to stay closed, which was a shame because cinemas feel much safer than shops yet at the time they could open despite getting really busy whereas cinemas were pretty empty.

My area got moved into tier 4, the first area in the country to do so just before Christmas, which means the cinemas had to stay closed and every non-essential place had to close. Additionally, there is no household mixing in tier 4, and we are told to stay at home except for essential reasons like buying groceries so I was stuck at home at Christmas and I will be at new year, and with more places entering tiers 3 and 4, most of England will be.

That means I have no idea when I will be able to attend a cinema again. I need to make some edits to this post but I am posting it now as it is fully written. Have a happy new year, stay safe and I will post again in the new year, my next post in the new year will probably be my top 10 films I saw at the cinema in 2020.
